A truly Canadian Artist Moment?

I am involved in several different writing communities, the majority of which are located in the United States, and as long as I have been involved in those communities, I have never heard of anyone doing this.  However, in the Canadian artistic/writing community, this is par for the course.

I've just submitted an application to my Provincial Arts Council for an emerging Writers Grant.  It's been a bit of a task getting all the material together, comming up with a Publication Resume, Artistic Statement, and Project Proposal.  It is expected, and commonplace conversation among artists and writers in Canada, to speak of the grants they have received and applied for.

So if I get the grant, does this make me truly a Canadian Writer?

Is this whole government granting agency a Canadian thing, or do you American Writers apply for government grants too?

At any rate, this is another step in the writing process, and one, quite frankly, I'm glad is done, simply because I'm involved in KeyCon this weekend on a couple of panels, one of which I'm moderating so I need to prepare, and I have some writing to do before the end of next week.  Yes, yes, I know, stop procrastinating.

This has been an  interesting application process and I must say, I feel very professional at the moment, and like I should be celebrating this momentous occassion.  I just applied for a writers grant, to which I meet the qualifications.  Wow.  I think it's just sinking in. I'll be interested to see the result.
